Passive solar building design Wikipedia

passive solar house design

The thermal mass, a 6-18 inch thick masonry wall, is located immediately behind south facing glass of single or double layer, which is mounted about 1 inch or less in front of the wall’s surface. Solar heat is absorbed by the wall’s dark-colored outside surface and stored in the wall’s mass, where it radiates into the living space. Solar heat migrates through the wall, reaching its rear surface in the late afternoon or early evening. When the indoor temperature falls below that of the wall’s surface, heat is radiated into the room.

Passive house and passive solar - free heat for homes

SIPs are sandwich panels with solid polystyrene (styrofoam) in the middle and oriented strand board structurally laminated to each side. One of the advantages of SIPs is that, if properly used, they are almost airtight, so a home will have minimal air infiltration. Keep in mind that you would also likely need to use mechanical ventilation, such as an energy recovery ventilator, for an airtight house to maintain indoor air quality while also maximizing energy efficiency. The light can be from passive windows or skylights and solar light tubes or from active daylighting sources. In traditional Japanese architecture the Shōji sliding panel doors, with translucent Washi screens, are an original precedent. International style, Modernist and Mid-century modern architecture were earlier innovators of this passive penetration and reflection in industrial, commercial, and residential applications.

The Tally: The Cost of Building a Solar Home

An indirect-gain passive solar home has its thermal storage between the south-facing windows and the living spaces. Passive house design principles are gaining traction worldwide as an effective way to minimize energy consumption in buildings. Typical homes allow unwanted flows of energy between the exterior and interior. The Kalyon Energy Control Building by Bilgin Architects in Karapınar, Turkey, exemplifies sustainable design through its innovative response to a challenging desert environment. The high-reflectivity stainless steel facade minimizes heat gain while creating a visual connection to the vast solar panel field it manages. This strategic placement and material choice underscore the project’s commitment to energy efficiency.

Is SunPower Still The Best Solar Company For Solar Panels?

In cool or moderate climates, a passive solar house will not require any air conditioning and will be comfortable inside simply with natural nighttime ventilation cooling. When the outdoor temperature drops below the inside temperature, you just open up the house and let it breathe. In hotter, drier climates, you might consider an evaporative cooler (such as those at Coolerado) to supplement cooling.

These engineered lumber products utilize materials that would otherwise be waste, composite decking made of recycled plastics, and more. The basic form of this home is what I call the “Western Solar Farmhouse.” The floor plan is arranged around a central great room with a high-vaulted gable roof. Around the sides of the central great room are grouped rooms or porches with a lower-pitched hipped roof. The porches can go around all sides as they do in the classic plantation house design that’s built in tropical climates with shade cooling and “outdoor” rooms. The Western Solar Farmhouse’s central living area is typically a rectangle, and the solar gain rooms would usually be located on the long solar side.

As part of a top-to-bottom renovation, consider installing a geothermal heating and cooling system to conserve energy. They work by tapping into stable temperatures a few feet below the earth’s surface to heat and cool a home. Poor heat and moisture management are the enemies of durable, comfortable, and efficient housing, and good building design and construction starts with a solid understanding of good building science. In the meantime we decided to maintain our old farmhouse as best we could and be thankful for the roof over our heads.

I usually recommend clear double glass for solar-oriented windows and “low-e” glazing on the other sides. Low-e glazing limits incoming heat in summer and reduces heat loss from the inside in winter. Using clear glass on the south wall windows allows more of the sun’s energy to warm the house in winter, when the sun will be able to enter the house through the south-facing windows. In colder climates, using insulative window drapes or blinds at night helps reduce overnight heat loss and increase comfort. Sunrays may fall on a wall during the daytime and raise the temperature of its thermal mass.

Net-zero energy homes

The greenhouse should allow us to grow more foods over winter, and startseedlings early for the main garden. This is a picture of Liz with a harvest fromour winter (outside) garden taken in February of 2004. To reduce unwanted heat gain in the summer, all windows should be shaded by an overhang or other devices such as awnings, shutters and trellises. If an awning on a south facing window protrudes to half of a window’s height, the sun’s rays will be blocked during the summer, yet will still penetrate into the house during the winter. The sun is low on the horizon during sunrise and sunset, so overhangs on east and west facing windows are not as effective.

The perimeter of the foundation wall or slab should be insulated to the frost line or around the slab perimeter. In a temperate or cold climate, the east and west walls of the sunspace should be insulated (no glass). The precise amount of equator-facing glass and thermal mass should be based on careful consideration of latitude, altitude, climatic conditions, and heating/cooling degree day requirements. 'Low-grade' energy needs, such as space and water heating, have proven over time to be better applications for passive use of solar energy. Objects and materials are placed behind these windows to absorb and retain the incoming heat. The materials used in these surfaces and objects are referred to as thermal mass materials due to their ability to effectively absorb and retain heat.

Passive solar houses in colder areas will use heat-absorbent materials in the building design to maximize natural heat retention. This article will discuss how passive solar homes are designed and provide real examples to outline the benefits of these design strategies in colder climates. In conclusion, sustainable housing trends are reshaping the way we conceive, design and inhabit our living spaces.

The open floor plan across all levels, alongside double-height ceilings, fosters a naturally light and airy atmosphere. This eliminates the need for excessive artificial lighting and air conditioning. Furthermore, the lack of partitions between the ground floor, featuring an open kitchen and bedroom, and the mezzanine master suite, allows for natural ventilation to flow freely throughout the villa. This synergy between design and Indonesia’s tropical climate creates a comfortable and eco-friendly living environment. The shape and size of your roof can also constitute effective passive design. Adding a large overhang allows light into your home during wintertime because the sun is at a higher angle, says Rodriguez.

Thermal chimneys are designed around the fact that warm air rises; they create a warm or hot zone of air (often through solar gain) and have a high exterior exhaust outlet. The hot air exits the building at the high vent, and cooler air is drawn in through a low vent. In the case of the Myers’ house, the available house pad was narrow and long on a north-south axis, so I placed extra glass on the south-facing great room for more solar heat gain.

The Last House on the Left 2009 film Wikipedia

last house on the left cast

In August 2006, Rogue Pictures finalized a deal to remake The Last House on the Left (1972) with original writer and director Wes Craven as a producer. In 1972, he did not have the budget to film every piece of the story he wanted to tell. Many different versions of the film exist on various DVD and VHS releases struck from different cuts of the film, many of them from different countries.

This movie is featured in the following articles.

A remake of Craven’s 1972 film of the same name (itself influenced by Ingmar Bergman’s The Virgin Spring), it stars Tony Goldwyn, Monica Potter, Garret Dillahunt, Sara Paxton, Spencer Treat Clark and Martha MacIsaac. Music is by John Murphy and cinematography by Sharone Meir. Estelle and her husband rush into the woods, where they find Mari's body and decide to take revenge. Estelle pretends to seduce Weasel, bites off his penis, and leaves him to bleed to death. Krug escapes into the living room and overpowers John before manipulating Junior into killing himself.

Executive Producer

To get a completely uncut version is difficult as even some cinema machinists cut footage from prints of the movie before screening it during the 1970s; many copies were cut or "hacked to pieces" and because of this, some scenes have become rarities. On the eve of her 17th birthday, Mari and friend Phyllis set off from her family home to attend a rock concert in the city. Attempting to score some drugs on the way, the pair run afoul of a group of vicious crooks, headed up by the sadistic Krug. Mari Collingwood plans to attend a concert with her friend Phyllis Stone for her seventeenth birthday. Her parents, Estelle and John, express their concern about her friendship with Phyllis but let her go and give her a peace symbol necklace. Before the concert, Mari and Phyllis encounter Junior while trying to buy marijuana.

If bad people hurt someone you love, how far would you go to hurt them back?

Chilling remake of the 1972 cult classic chronicles the gripping tale of homicidal maniacs who seek refuge at an out-of-the-way house that happens to be the home of their victim's parents, who learn of the killers' crime and seek revenge. The next morning, Mari and Phyllis are bound, gagged, and put in the trunk of Krug's car and transported to the woods. Phyllis is forced to urinate in her jeans, and Mari and Phyllis are forced to perform sexual acts on each other. Phyllis distracts the kidnappers to give Mari an opportunity to escape but is chased by Sadie and Weasel, while Junior stays behind to guard Mari. Mari tries gaining Junior's trust by giving him her necklace and calling him "Willow". Phyllis stumbles across a cemetery where she is cornered and stabbed by Weasel.

He leads them to an apartment where they are trapped by the criminals. Phyllis tries to escape and reason with them, but she fails and is gang-raped. Meanwhile, Mari's unsuspecting parents prepare a surprise party for her. After they change out of their bloody clothes, the gang goes to the Collingwoods' home, masquerading as traveling salesmen. Later, when Junior is in the midst of heroin withdrawal, Estelle enters the bathroom to check on him and sees Mari's peace symbol necklace around his neck.

Mari, Seventeen, is Dying. Even For Her the Worst is Yet to Come!

Craven, who wrote and directed the original film, was interested to see what kind of film could be made on a larger budget, as the limited funds forced him to remove scenes he had wanted to film to tell a complete story. One of the elements Iliadis wanted to avoid with the film, given its graphic nature, was turning it into "torture porn". For Craven and Iliadis, the film primarily illustrates how even the most normal of families can be driven to commit evil acts if pushed too far. Distributor Hallmark Releasing, in partnership with American International Pictures, gave him and Craven funding after the box office success of Cunningham's Together (1971).

The Last House on the Left was released in the United States on August 30, 1972. While the film initially received a polarizing reception from critics, it was highly profitable, grossing over $3 million at the domestic box office. The rights to The Last House on the Left were picked up by Rogue Pictures in 2006, with the remake being the first film produced by Craven's newly formed studio Midnight Pictures.

A storm forces Krug, Francis, Sadie, and Justin to seek refuge at a nearby house. Justin is the only one to deduce that the inhabitants, John and Emma, are Mari's parents, and intentionally leaves Mari's necklace on the counter to alert them about their daughter. When John and Emma find Mari barely alive on their porch, and the necklace on the counter, they realize that Mari's tormentors are the people in their guest house.

Finding Francis dead, Krug realizes that they are Mari's parents. John and Justin break in and Sadie beats them with a shower curtain rod, almost knocking them out until Emma shoots Sadie through her left eye, killing her. Krug hides, and attacks John and Justin when they search for him. Justin is stabbed by Krug, but with a combined effort from Emma and John, Krug is knocked unconscious.

She finds blood-soaked clothing in their luggage and overhears them talking about Mari's death and her disposal in a nearby lake. Like the exploitation films Night of the Living Dead (1968) and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), the film has received critical reevaluation years after release, with particular praise towards the narrative and performances of Peabody and Hess. It has since achieved a cult following and received a nomination for AFI's 100 Years...100 Thrills in 2001. The Last House on the Left is directed by Dennis Iliadis and adapted to screenplay by Adam Alleca and Carl Ellsworth from the story by Wes Craven (co-producer here).

John, Emma, Mari, and Justin then leave in the boat for the hospital. Its visceral brutality is more repulsive than engrossing, but The Last House on the Left nevertheless introduces director Wes Craven as a distinctive voice in horror. 10 Insights from Apples Human Interface Design Guidelines by Danny Sapio UX Collective

When using product bezels in your marketing materials, be sure to review these marketing and identity guidelines. I’ve been developing an IOS app for the past few months and have been constantly referring to Apple’s Human Interface Design Guidelines. I would consider it a must-read for any aspiring or current UI/UX designer.

The iOS 16 Design Guidelines: An Illustrated Guide

As the public becomes more aware of the concerns around AI privacy, this will become a key marketing point. The larger the LLM, the more data is available, and it should not be surprising that those data sets were originally built in the cloud to be accessed as an online service. There has been a push to create LLMs with a small enough data footprint to run on a mobile device. Overnight, a notable portion of iCloud users were getting logged out of their accounts across all of their devices, and the only way back in was to perform a password reset. WWDC in June is expected to include quite a few advancements in AI for Apple's products. In April, a new version of Ferret added the ability to parse data points within an app's screenshot and to generally understand how the app functions.

How can I make my app stand out in the App Store?

In edge-to-edge devices like iPhone X and iPad Pro, the display has rounded corners that closely match the device’s overall dimensions. Other devices — such as iPhone SE and iPad Air — have a rectangular display. Optimizing app performance, minimizing crashes, and ensuring stability are essential for providing a seamless and reliable user experience.

Though designers are starting to bring much welcome diversity to the app game, iOS Design remains the standard for many UI professionals and users. This post will share essential design guidelines, examples of exceptional iOS apps, and resources to facilitate your design process. The entire formula behind the Human Interface Guidelines is to target consistency among every interface & design and adaptivity to the Apple Ecosystem.

The basics of iOS Human Interface Guidelines

It’s recommended to provide different sizes when publishing your app, to make sure it displays perfectly on all devices, and in different contexts. Using iOS’ native elements will provide your users with a sense of familiarity and intuitiveness. To ensure maximal consistency across its ecosystem, Apple offers detailed design guidelines and resources called Human Interface Guidelines, or HIG. Steve Jobs shaped how we interact with our phones by popularizing touchscreens.

Finally, before deciding on which animations to deploy, it’s always worth studying iOS built-in app animations. Users enjoy consistency across apps and expect the same smooth transitions, scrolling, and orientation changes as they interact daily. Although unique branding and creativity are allowed, following these guidelines will significantly improve your chances to get published on the App Store, especially if you’re a beginner.

MacBook M4: Price and release date speculation

Creating dark UI is its own topic, deserving of its own guide – and its one of the things I cover in a lot more depth in Learn UI Design. A superellipse – or squircle – looks a lot like a normal rounded rectangle. Apple’s rationales for the swich are (a) a superellipse more gently transitions from the straight part to the curved part, leading to an overall more organic shape, and (b) this aligns better with the corners of Apple’s hardware devices. If you design an app icon specifically at the size that it appears in every possible location for every possible iPhone and iPad, you will end up needing to create almost a dozen variations of the same icon. Also note that sometimes this tertiary size is used in a secondary manner – i.e. there’s only size 17 and size 12, with no size 15 text in between them.

MacRumors attracts a broad audience of both consumers and professionals interested in the latest technologies and products. We also boast an active community focused on purchasing decisions and technical aspects of the iPhone, iPad, Mac, and other Apple platforms. Links to all of the apps that are nominated can be found on Apple's website. Apple warns of the importance of tone and context, advising use of plain, inclusive language that doesn’t exclude people.

The steady release of research papers on new techniques has kept Apple’s AI plans visible to the industry if not yet to consumers. Shazam showcases the importance of providing a seamless and engaging experience for users. The app’s interface is designed to make music recognition effortless, with a prominent “Shazam” button and real-time audio visualization. The app’s design focuses on clarity and responsiveness, providing users with immediate feedback and a smooth transition from audio recognition to displaying song details. Evernote is a note-taking app that demonstrates the power of organization and consistent design. The app features a clean and structured interface, allowing users to create and manage notes effortlessly.

Learning from these examples you can make a lot of improvement in your own app design or app redesign if you are doing it all over again. Well, if you want to create a killer iOS app design, you need to learn from the best. And in this section, we shall be going through some of the best design iOS Apps on the market.

You should go through the Mac Catalyst guidelines because this will tell you how to adjust & tune your iOS apps to make sure there’s still a great experience on the macOS. I’ll do an overview of this section so you basically get to know what Catalyst is. Follow Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines (HIG) to maintain a consistent experience across iOS devices, making it easier for users to navigate and interact with your app. Maintain a sense of depth and hierarchy, utilizing subtle visual cues and animations to guide users through your app.

But scrollable lists can be shown scrolling under the home indicator – and you can even select the item directly under the home indicator by tapping. As soon as the user starts scrolling, iOS specifies for some interesting behavior. In my iPhone UI Figma Template, I include guides at all of these demarcating where these rows typically sit. The most epic cruise ever? What it's like traveling to the North Pole on a luxury icebreaker

cruise to north pole

This epic voyage sails from Nome in Alaska through the pack ice to the North Pole and then onto Longyearbyen in Svalbard. The Arctic ocean is surrounded by land on almost all sides, just one of the reasons why the sea ice here is far thicker than in Antarctica. It also makes travelling by ship here a completely different experience, only possible on an ice breaker ship that can power through 2-3m of ice.

Best of Northern Norway Classic - 71° North Cape ( Private Tour)

A unique setting, the refuge of a particularly rich avifauna, offering you the possibility of taking fabulous photographs from the deck of your ship. These are truly remote areas, so it's not surprising that Arctic trips to the North Pole tend to attract seasoned travelers looking to tick off one more spot on their bucket list. The expansive region takes in northern parts of Norway and the Svalbard archipelago, Sweden, Finland, Greenland, Iceland and Canada. The Le Commandant Charcot , France's only PC2-rated polar class ship, is equipped with polar research laboratories for hosting scientists onboard, thus providing an unprecedented level of support for academic research.

Find more details about the North Pole expedition ships that have icebreaker status to reach the top of the world below, as well as more Arctic travel resources. Or contact our experts to begin planning your North Pole expedition today. In the past, some ships offered a hot air balloon ride or helicopter rides above the ice along the way.

Big ice

When you're not standing at the expansive bow taking in the scenery, you can visit the sauna, do a few laps in the pool, or pick out a good book from the well-stocked library. Travelling due north by icebreaker through heavy pack ice to stand at 90 degrees north at the Geographic North Pole is a ‘bucket list’ item shared by many. Achieving it will make you part of an elite and exclusive club, one of the very few people who have ever made it to the top of the world. The Arctic is an otherworldly land of boundless vistas, perpetual daylight in summer, glistening ice floes and abundant wildlife. No wonder that taking a North Pole cruise is becoming a growth industry in once rarely visited realms. There will be opportunities to climb aboard the ship’s helicopter to admire from above the beauty of the frozen expanse and the powerful vessel plowing through the ice.

Explore the Arctic

During the summer, milder weather allows safe passage through the navigable sea ice on an icebreaker to the North Pole. The North Pole is one of Earth's most remote and inaccessible places, making it a dream destination for any explorer. Witness pristine and untouched polar wilderness, icy seascapes, and unique wildlife on this journey into the heart of the Arctic. This ship's pièce de résistance is its on board helicopter and hot air balloon. There's no better way to get a glimpse of the scale of your ship as it carves through the ice, a small speck in an otherwise white, icy wilderness.

We will assist you with choosing your preferred North Pole cruise ship, clarify the differences between voyages, and help you make your cabin selection based on your preference. Choose Le Commandant Charcot for a luxurious experience and exciting itineraries, which include exploring Svalbard, Scoresby Sund, and East Greenland as part of a North Pole Cruise. Or cross the Arctic Ocean on a trans-Arctic expedition from Canada to Svalbard. Le Commandant Charcot is the world's first hybrid-electric polar exploration ship.

Sightseeing tours by helicopter will be available – just be sure to book early, so you don’t miss out. High in the air you'll be able to observe the Victory trampling through glaciers amidst the breathtaking splendor of this polar paradise. Following your arrival into Murmansk, Russia, you will group with the other explorers at the hotel. These conditions can reduce visibility and make outdoor activities challenging. The icebreaker is built to navigate through ice and has a reinforced hull to withstand contact with ice. However, it’s essential to note that weather conditions can change rapidly, and cold snaps can occur, leading to sub-freezing temperatures.

Nuclear propulsion allows for continuous and reliable operation in ice-covered waters. The vessel offers a high standard of cuisine, featuring a variety of dining options for passengers to enjoy during their polar expeditions. Operated by Ponant Cruises, a French company specializing in high-end expedition-style cruises, Le Commandant Charcot is the first purpose-built expedition cruise ship capable of reaching the North Pole.

North Pole in Luxury

Weather and sea ice could waylay the most meticulously planned routes. Animals in the Arctic are generally more dispersed than those in other expedition cruise locales like Antarctica and the Galapagos, where guides have regular go-to viewing spots. While not as luxurious as some cruise ships, the 50 Years of Victory provides comfortable accommodations for passengers on polar expeditions.

Our luxurious French expedition ship, Le Commandant Charcot, shudders as it plows through a thick slab of snow-covered ice. Next is a transatlantic crossing to Africa, followed by a northward journey to Europe, eventually crossing the Arctic Circle off the coast of Norway. Then, there's the return transatlantic crossing via Iceland and Greenland, followed by a trip down the East Coast and back to Fort Lauderdale. Send your enquiry and our Travel Experience Team will search from 100’s of cruises and assist you finding the right ship and itinerary for you. Born from a passion for exploring remote places and a wealth of knowledge about luxury expedition cruising, we are here to help you plan your perfect expedition.

Without doubt one of the most epic expeditions on earth, the North Pole cruise is a once in a lifetime adventure. During your cruise, you will encounter various types of ice, including pack ice and icebergs. During the Arctic summer, cruising to the North Pole occurs between late June and early September. The climate and weather conditions in the Arctic vary considerably, so it’s crucial to be prepared. Each North Pole Cruise includes accommodation in well-appointed cabins, meals, expert guides, guest lecturers outlined in the itinerary, Zodiac cruises and excursions, and specified charter flights. Transarctic North Pole Cruises commence in Seattle with a charter flight to Nome in Alaska, where the ship expedition begins.

You and your fellow explorers will ceremoniously join hands as you walk in a circle, known as the international Round Dance. The ship will drop anchor at the true 90 degrees point, before those on board are able to disembark onto the frozen waters and share a celebratory champagne. The first step to booking your cruise is to contact our Travel Experience Team, who will be happy to help you with your choice of itinerary and provide you details about availability and pricing for your selected voyage. Advance planning is essential as expeditions are often booked a year in advance. Start planning your North Pole Cruise at least 18 months before departure to ensure you have the best choice of itineraries and cabins.

Rode Fjord and its cliffs coloured red by iron ore provide a fascinating setting you will not want to miss. Discovering these stunning places in the wake of great explorers like Captain Charcot, who was deeply attached to the land of the Inuit, inspires a profound reverence. The north-east of Greenland is renowned for being home to one of the oldest and thickest layers of ice on the planet. The largest island in the Svalbard archipelago, its name meaning “pointed mountains” in German, Spitsbergen is the last piece of land before the Arctic ice floe. Aboard your ship, you will sail along the extremely spectacular coastline of this icy land. Between millennial glaciers and rugged mountains, you will discover a jagged coastline, hollowed-out by fjords.

Because seals gather in the Cambridge Strait, polar bear are frequently seen here. Although it's rare for a polar bear to catch a seal, just seeing the hunt is fascinating. You'll get 15 minutes high above the North Pole looking down on the beautiful and icy landscape. Not including walrus, there are several species of seals found in the archipelago.

Historically, the Arctic has attracted intrepid explorers in search of adventure. From the territory of Ultima Thule, the mythical kingdom of the Vikings, to the North Pole, men have surpassed themselves. We still talk today of the exploits of James Cook, who sailed the coasts of Alaska in 1778, Roald Amundsen, the first man to traverse the Northwest Passage in 1905, and Paul-Emile Victor. The latter set off for the first time in 1934 with the famous Jean-Baptiste Charcot, heading for Greenland. His account served to bring to light these populations and their traditions, little-known in Europe until then. Witness the unparalleled beauty of the frozen Arctic wilderness for yourself.

9-Day Best of the Tennessee River cruise from Chattanooga to Nashville on American Duchess

The lively streets are lined with art galleries and unique shops that welcome you at every turn and the sounds of talented performers hoping for stardom echo from every pub. Wander along the landing to admire more than 50 murals which highlight the region’s rich history. Learn the importance of the town as headquarters for Civil War General Ulysses S. Grant as he embarked to secure Union control of the rivers. Only a block away, the excellent River Discovery Center illuminates for you the importance of the rivers to this historic port.

Grand Ohio River Cruise

Discover some of America’s natural beauty on a Tennessee River cruise. The river’s name is believed to be a derivation of the 18th-century Cherokee village, Tanasi, that was formed upon its banks. The new cruises stop in Decatur, AL; Florence, AL; Savannah, TN; Paducah, KY; and also sail the Cumberland River, exploring Lake Barkley and the Land Between the Lakes, the company said.

Day 1: Chattanooga, Tennessee

We opted to climb the stairs to see the top of the sacred mound, but most guests did not because of the climb. A few couples were in their 40s and 50s, like us, with the majority of guests between 60 to 80 years old. During our cruise, there were about 110 guests, whereas the guest capacity of the ship is around 180 passengers.

Day 4: Savannah, Tennessee

American’s eight-day Tennessee River Cruises will operate again in 2024, cruising and even longer season from May to early November. There's something eerie and dramatic about hearing crickets and frogs and gosh-knows-what at night along the Tennessee river, while thunder rolls in the distance and dark storm clouds build up dramatically over the lit, cozy interior of the ship. Enjoy the idyllic countryside of the Ohio River and the wonder of the mighty Mississippi that inspired Mark Twain. The Ohio River was pivotal in the development and exploration of the American West and along the way we highlight much that has defined our American roots from the Civil War to bluegrass music.

However, in other cities, it’s possible to do multiple excursions because the ship is docked all day, and different excursions are offered at different times in the morning and afternoon. The coach buses we traveled on were brand new, and the drivers were very nice. Florence is one of four cities that make up the "the Shoals," an area spanning two counties and separated by the Tennessee River. Explore the charming downtown, with locally owned stores featuring everything from handmade jewelry and bohemian chic fashion to antique collectables. Stop at the Wine Seller for a tasting or sip Java at the popular Bookmarks Coffee Shop in the public library. There are a variety of venues in which to enjoy live entertainment including the Shoals Theatre and FloBama Music Hall.

Quite a few passengers signed up for this excursion; we were just shy of 50 guests on the trip. After the coach bus was loaded and ready to go from the port, a National Park Ranger joined us. She was enthusiastic, incredibly knowledgeable and engaging, sharing information about the area and the Civil War era as the bus drove us to our destinations. We had time to go there after our Civil War battlefields excursion; the museum was worth the minutes, and the entrance for all American Cruise Line guests was complimentary. Chairs were set up in between sections of the wall and the prayer circle for the visiting cruise guests. We sat amongst the trees and stones as Tom’s son explained his family history and about the stones that comprised the wall, which is the largest unmortared wall in the United States.

Handy, known as the “Father of the Blues,” and visit the Frank Lloyd Wright Rosenbaum House, the only Wright building that is open to the public in the Southeast. Explore the scenic downtown, dotted with squares and parks that are within walking distance of the ship. 2023 cruises will operate June through August aboard three of the company’s five Mississippi riverboats, including the newly christened American Serenade. The program will be reprised in 2024 on an extended season from May to early November. The Tennessee River cruise includes a free pre-cruise hotel stay at Nashville or Chattanooga. The Tennessee Valley is also home to musical greats, from Johnny Cash to Patsy Cline, and there are opportunities to visit both singers'  museums along with other music-focused experiences.

Featured Ports

View a treasure trove of incredible works of art created with fabric, needle, and thread at the National Quilt Museum. We embarked on American Serenade river cruise ship for the journey from Chattanooga to Nashville, Tennessee itinerary. The itinerary is open-jaw, which is cruise-speak for a journey that starts in one city and ends in another, as opposed to a closed-jaw itinerary which starts and ends in the same port.

Onboard Entertainment

The cruise includes a range of excursions such as visits to Shiloh National Military Park in Savannah, the US Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville and the National Quilt Museum in Paducah. Also available are active outdoor excursions like an ATV backcountry adventure in Chattanooga and a visit to The Shoals where participants can golf 18 holes at the Robert Trent Jones golf course. 2023 cruises will operate this June through August aboard three of the company’s five Mississippi riverboats, including newly christened American Serenade.

The walk from the hotel to the riverfront is only around 10 minutes, but with people’s luggage, walkers, and the Tennessee heat, nearly everyone opted to climb onboard for the short ride. Though we didn’t take the transfers offered to or from the airport at the beginning and end of the cruise, we did the pre-cruise hotel stay in Chattanooga. Embarkation day transfers to the ship were seamless and well organized. Nothing quite blew us away, but there were certainly meals we enjoyed, and we were never hungry, with multiple snacking and eating options throughout the day. Residing at the confluence of the Tennessee River and the Ohio River, Paducah will make you feel as if you stepped back in time. Founded by William Clark (of Lewis and Clark), Paducah is known as a National Heritage Destination with many talented culinary artists, painters, potters, and jewelers creating and displaying their works there.

However, we did hear from multiple people on the cruise that it was disappointing for a few reasons, namely that the desserts were not up to par with expectations and that the sunset is truly weather dependent. Unfortunately, the day we were in town, it was overcast and rainy, and the guests who signed up for the excursion couldn’t enjoy a picturesque sunset because of that. Some excursions are included in each port, and some are an additional charge.

As you begin your amazing journey, be treated to the entertainment of our onboard musicians and the camaraderie of fellow guests and crew. Cruise aboard the newest riverboats in the region and enjoy perfect comfort and modern amenities as you travel to each historical destination. The fabric of the region is brought to life through our delicious regional cuisine, great onboard music, and customized excursions to historical landmarks.

Enjoy a relaxing day cruising Lake Barkley and admire the most picturesque scenery in the American Heartland as you bask in the comfort of the most modern American Riverboat on the Mississippi. From large, wonderful windows and your private balcony, gaze at the everchanging views of the river valley and marvel at the ship’s transit through locks and dams. As avid river cruisers, we were looking forward to our American Cruise Lines Tennessee River cruise for months. It was a well-organized and scenic trip with a wonderful balance of time in ports and time sailing. We saw parts of America we likely never would have otherwise visited and joyfully interacted with the American Serenade river cruise ship crew and fellow guests. Board your ship and enjoy a leisurely day winding through the Appalachian Mountains as we follow the river through stunning landscapes.

American Harmony Cruise: Expert Review 2023

harmony cruise

There was a crew member at the entrance making sure everyone was washing their hands. So far we have had lunch at Jamie’s Italian, Chops and Sabor (which is being replaced by Playmakers on most ships. It’s currently only available on Harmony and Allure.) Dinners have been at Coastal Kitchen and 150 Central Park. Everything from the service to the meals themselves have been outstanding.

American Harmony Departs on Inaugural Mississippi River Cruise

Particularly noteworthy are the two Grand Suites that measure 900 square feet apiece and include balconies that wrap around the stern of the ship, offering 270-degree views of the Mississippi River. These suites also boast separate living and sleeping areas with floor-to-ceiling glass windows. Complimentary room service is offered to all passengers during mealtimes. Royal Caribbean’s kids club is Adventure Ocean, where children are split into three groups by age, and then given plenty of fun activities to enjoy, all day long.

Best Cruises From Texas

With 18 decks, 24 restaurants, 23 pools and whirlpools, 2,747 staterooms and suites, a massive casino, and hundreds of onboard activities, Harmony of the Seas stands out for the variety it offers. Even cabins in the ship's lowest category are thoughtfully designed and comfortable, with space for relaxing and plenty of storage. American Harmony's uppermost deck features open-air seating and plenty of viewing space for those who want to take in the sights and sounds of the Columbia and Snake rivers.

The answer is an impressive 1,188 feet long (almost 4 soccer pitches!), which is only slightly smaller than the newer Symphony of the Seas. Discover the best cruise restaurants available onboard on Harmony of the Seas for an unforgettable family vacation filled with delicious cuisine. Royal Caribbean offers plenty of great itineraries to choose from if you’re looking for an unforgettable cruise from Texas.

COSTA MAYA

Royal Caribbean’s Harmony of the Seas is a relatively new ship, at least by cruising industry standards, at under 10 years old. Debuting as one of the largest ships in the world, since its 2016 launch, the ship has been surpassed by bigger (and, some might argue, better) ships. The pool has been a bustle of activities with the return of the belly flop and world’s sexiest man competitions as well as plenty of live music. I was curious to see not only what’s different since then, but how cruising has progressed since my last sailing just two months ago. For reference sake, I’m writing this blog on day three of a seven night sailing.

Spice things up with burritos, tacos and fresh-smashed guac at Sabor Modern Mexican. And when it’s time for date night, enjoy the sizzling cuts at Chops Grille℠. In a Harmony of the Seas vs Symphony of the Seas face-off, the latter wins in size, but both ships offer an almost identical experience.

Signage boards provide detailed info on all Central Park's trees and plants. The following dining venues are complimentary - Park Cafe, Windjammer Marketplace (buffet), Main Dining Room, Solarium Bistro, Cafe Promenade, Sorrento's Pizza, Boardwalk Dog House, Mini Bites, Coastal Kitchen (for suite passengers only). The boat has 17 decks, of which 16 are passenger-accessible and 12 with cabins.

Royal Caribbean International

Embarking the ship took only minutes and we were on the ship in no time! This was quite different from my last experience in Galveston, but that’s because there was a Coast Guard inspection. On embarkation day, my friend and I requested a Lyft to the Galveston port. I stayed in Houston near the airport for my last cruise out of Galveston. I think this is a good option for those who fly in late because it’s nice to have a short ride to your hotel after flying all day.

The price for any of these rooms will depend on factors, such as time of year, demand for rooms on the particular sailing, and how many guests in each room. You can refer to our guide to choosing a stateroom for more information on the basics, although there are some special room types worth discussing. For parents with young children that are still wearing diapers, there is a designated baby and infant splash pool, designed specially for them.

harmony cruise

Lastly, the royal loft suite is the biggest and the best of the bunch, with more than 1,500 square feet of space, a wraparound balcony, multiple bedrooms and bathrooms, and even a baby grand piano. Grand suites offer extra space, including large balconies, living areas and large bathrooms with tubs and double vanities. Junior suites are on the lower end of the suite spectrum, offering less space and fewer flashy details, but you still get all the VIP amenities discussed above. Balcony staterooms might not always offer as much interior space as an ocean view stateroom, but they do offer that great outdoor space, accessible via big glass doors that allow for views even when you’re not outside. Ocean view staterooms will offer a window of varying sizes and shapes, depending on the room you pick, but expect more space than what you’d get in an interior stateroom, up to 354 square feet and capable of sleeping up to eight guests. “The Fine Line” was Harmony’s main show in the aqua theater for years.

Royal Caribbean put a great deal of emphasis on its specialty dining options and enjoying a specialty restaurant or two will likely not "break the bank," and can really enhance your cruise experience. Specialty dining is an choice for guests who want something more than what is offered in the complimentary dining, with an emphasis on certain foods that are otherwise unavailable all the time. Think of specialty dining like you would going out for dinner versus staying home and cooking something.

I was initially worried because I imagined we would hear thumping music all night long. On the last day of the cruise, I scheduled a Lyft ride for the next morning from the Galveston port to the HOU airport. My ride was right on time and picked me up at the front of the terminal building.

On the first night of the cruise, I utilized my Diamond Plus BOGO offer which allowed me to purchase one specialty restaurant dinner and receive complimentary dining for a second guest. This offer can only be used on the first or second night of the cruise, so my friend and I decided to start the cruise off right with dinner at Jamie’s Italian. I found that there were plenty of options to grab a snack or enjoy a three-course meal. I also thought the quality of the food was excellent, especially at the specialty dining venues. The Just Married room décor package features a mirror cling and magnetic door sign, decorations and a commemorative frame.

The last time I was on Harmony of the Seas back in 2022, I remember being wowed by Grease so I was eager to see it again. I admired the singers, dancers, costumes, and music the entire 90-minute show. Speaking of Johnny Rockets, my friend and I often indulged ourselves with a nightly milkshake from here.

On the upper deck is the popular Guy's Burger Joint, which is oddly set a bit farther away from the action on Excel Class ships. Farther afield on Deck 16, passengers can check out Shaquille O'Neal's Big Chicken restaurant or venture to Lido Marketplace, the ship's complimentary buffet. Thankfully, that demeanor changes once you hit Carnival’s for-fee dining options; our meals in Bonsai Sushi and Bonsai Teppanyaki were above reproach in terms of service. Bars, lounges and cabin stewards all seemed personable and friendly, for the most part. But Carnival’s complimentary dining options came with an unwanted side-order of visible hostility. Carnival has also thought about the placement of its Kids Clubs.

It felt like a complete scam. There were hate crimes, misleading information, lies, and more. We were blamed for causing a ruckus when there were a number of children running in the hallway and knocking on cabin doors. We were denied drinks because I look young, even though I am 22 and paid to be on this cruise.

One example is the Dr. Seuss-themed Seuss-a-palooza Parade that makes its way through the Currents zone once per sailing. I happened to be sitting at a table in the area when the festivities kicked off. I decided to stay to see what it was all about, and I'm sorry I did. As costumed Dr. Seuss characters arrived, Carnival staff asked the children to scream solely for the sake of screaming.

Go one deck farther, and you can choose between the Havana Bar, which serves Latin-themed cocktails, and the Heroes Tribute Lounge, which has a special menu of drinks dedicated to military members. I also wasn't impressed with how long it took a bartender to ask for my order, especially since it wasn't particularly crowded. As a sucker for soft-serve ice cream, I was a frequent visitor to the three soft-serve ice cream and frozen yogurt machines on decks 8, 16 and 17.
